Antioch College Running Out of Money, Closing in ‘08

Antioch College in Yellow Springs Ohio is a privately funded college that was founded in 1852.  Over the years it has become known as a forward thinking College. A college that doesn’t score students, rather blends curriculum with hands on experience. In 2008, this college is closing it’s doors. Perhaps for good.

Their current plan is to stay closed for 4 years and reopen in 2012. But no one is holding their breath until they do.

Antioch College can count people such as Rod Sterling and Stephen Jay Gould as graduates.

Antioch College once boasted as many as 2000 students in the ’60’s. Last year, Antioch could only muster less than 500.

Antioch College was one of those schools with a small student body with a rural setting. The type of setting that provided a memorable college experienced when compared to many of the huge campuses in large cities.  Antioch made U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges of 2007” list this year. Even that couldn’t turn things around.

Antioch will be missed. Yes, it’s closed before, but those times were different (once during the Civil War and once due to financial reasons, unlike the current situation).
