College textbooks can be one of the largest expenses a college student faces. Next to tuition, room and board, textbooks can take a big chunk out of your college budget.

There’s no use in paying out the yazoo for new college textbooks. Below are 7 simple steps to scoring cheap textbooks.

  1. Register early for as many of your classes as possible. Start asking professors or college staff which textbooks will be required for the class. If you know students who’ve taken the same class, you may be able to score their college textbooks for nothing. Find out which textbooks you’ll need as soon as you can. Unfortunately, some colleges have began a policy of not releasing this information until the last minute. College textbooks are big business and they want as much as your money as they can get.
  2. Not sure what a fair price is for textbooks? Surf through the college’s library to price shop. You may also want to get on the Library’s notification list (if they have one) when new books or book requirements come in.
  3. You’ll need to know 4 things from the required books in order to find them used. Obviously the first thing is the name of the book and its volume or edition number, the name of the author and the books ISBN number and finally the price.
  4. First try finding used or low cost books in your college’s library. The next place it search for it is in the local public library. In some instances, you may be able to check the book our for the entire semester! Now that’s a cheap textbook!
  5. If you’re unable to find the book at the library’s, then search the internet. Ebay, Amazon.com as well as other book sources like Barnes & Noble and Abe Books are sources you should check first.
  6. If you’re still unable to find the books, try going to Google and typing in the ISBN number. Don’t forget to enter the search like this: ISBN:1234567890 or ISBN#1234567890
  7. As a last resort, check student groups around campus. You’ll likely to find contacts who know which books you need.

Getting deals on textbooks isn’t brain surgery, but you’ll have to do you homework. Make sure you start early and make sure you actually get the right textbook.
